Assigning chores that match a child’s developmental stage is one of those parenting tasks that sounds simple but requires knowing child development, your specific kid, and how to make it stick — all at once. Assign too easy a task and kids learn nothing. Assign too hard and you create failure loops that kill motivation. TaskTroll’s age-banded chore library removes the guesswork with a curated set of tasks organized by developmental band: 3–5, 6–8, 9–11, 12–14, and 15–18. Each band reflects what occupational therapists and child psychologists consider appropriate for motor skills, attention span, and responsibility capacity at that stage.

When you add a child to your TaskTroll household and enter their age, the app auto-suggests a starter chore pack from their band. You can accept, remove, or customize any individual task. As your child ages into the next band, TaskTroll prompts you to review their chore load with suggestions for what to graduate them to. This isn’t a rigid system — it’s a scaffold. You know your kid. TaskTroll gives you the framework.

The age-banded system is especially powerful in blended families where you may have children spanning a decade in age difference. Rather than one flat chore list that frustrates the 7-year-old and bores the 15-year-old, each child sees tasks calibrated to them. That fairness — perceived and actual — dramatically reduces the “that’s not fair” dinner-table arguments that drain family energy every week.

Use-case story: When Renata blended her household with her husband’s three kids, she was suddenly managing five children ages 6 through 16 with wildly different capability levels. She spent her first TaskTroll setup session accepting the app’s age-band suggestions for each child. Within a week, the 6-year-old was happily sorting laundry by color, the 12-year-old was loading the dishwasher without being asked, and the 16-year-old had taken on weekly grocery list drafting. Nobody complained the system was unfair because the tasks visibly matched each person’s level.

How to use it

  • Enter each child’s date of birth during household setup — TaskTroll calculates their developmental band automatically
  • Review the suggested starter chore pack for each child and toggle off any tasks that don’t fit your household
  • Enable the “Band Birthday Prompt” so TaskTroll reminds you to review chores when a child ages into the next band
  • Browse the full chore library filtered by age band in Settings > Chore Library to discover tasks you hadn’t considered
